HIVE (Enhancing MLTC Management for HIV Populations) is a Horizon Europe–funded international research project aimed at improving the management of HIV alongside multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs), with a strong focus on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) contexts.
As people living with HIV increasingly experience longer life expectancy, the coexistence of HIV with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders presents new challenges for health systems. HIVE addresses these challenges by developing, adapting, and testing integrated, evidence-based interventions that promote continuity of care, health equity, and system sustainability.
The project is built around three core interventions:
- an adapted mHealth application designed to support self-management, health literacy, and navigation of healthcare services;
- Interpersonal Counselling (IPC) to strengthen patient–provider communication and psychosocial support; and
- the integration of NCD care into existing HIV services to reduce fragmentation and improve outcomes.
HIVE follows a structured yet flexible implementation research methodology, progressing through planning, adaptation, roll-out, and evaluation phases over a 36-month period. Clinical trials will be conducted in four countries, supported by a consortium of 15 partners from 10 countries, bringing together academic institutions, public health bodies, technology developers, and civil society organizations.
By combining digital innovation, person-centred care, and health system integration, HIVE aims to generate practical evidence and scalable solutions for improving the quality of life and long-term health outcomes of people living with HIV and multiple chronic conditions. The project also contributes to European and global policy discussions on sustainable, integrated care models that prioritize equity and real-world applicability.
